Gut Horn

The history of the Horn estate, or Horn Castle, dates back to the 13th century: In 1247, the Count of Oldenburg took over the lands of Knight Mule, who resided in Delmenhorst, in order to build Delmenhorst Castle there. In compensation, Knight Mule received land near Gristede on the old military road to Apen. Here, in the second half of the 13th century, he built and founded the medieval ministerial castle of Horn. It was named after a parcel of land located there called “Horn.” The castle itself consisted of an outer and inner moat, a rampart with a palisade, and the castle grounds themselves.
Until 2005, the property was owned by the Ovie family and was most recently used as a café and as an exhibition and retail space for various merchants. In 2006, the current owners completely renovated the manor house and restored the original murals from 1858. The manor house is now used for private purposes. Events are now held in the barns. In addition, the Horn Estate can be booked as an event venue.
