Ammerländer Bauernhaus

The Ammerland Farmhouse is one of the oldest open-air museums of its kind in Germany. Here, you can experience what life was like 300 years ago. The museum, located in the heart of the spa gardens, comprises 17 houses and outbuildings that blend harmoniously into the landscape.

What makes the Ammerland Farmhouse special?

The open-air museum was built between 1909 and 1910 from two former half-timbered houses. The Association for the Preservation of Local Heritage is dedicated to vividly portraying the way of life of bygone eras. The large farmhouse with its open hearth takes center stage and demonstrates how ham was smoked in the past. Although the hearth is extinguished during tours, the atmosphere conveys a sense of tradition and authenticity.

In addition, the mill features a fully functional grinding mechanism. On special holidays, such as German Mill Day on Pentecost Monday, traditional bread and stuten are baked here. At the Spieker Restaurant, visitors can enjoy regional Ammerland cuisine based on old recipes.

The half-timbered houses not only offer insights into history; they are also popular photo subjects. In summer, they look like something out of a fairy tale, while in winter they exude a dreamy coziness. Many couples choose this setting for their wedding photos, making the museum a special place.
