Rastplatz Bokeler Burg

Historic Rest Area
More than 1,000 years ago, Bokel Castle served as a refuge for the local population. In the early Middle Ages, when this place was still the seat of justice for the entire Ammerland region, peasant law was administered here. The total diameter of the complex is about 100 meters; the castle grounds measure 55 by 65 meters. Inside the rampart, which is about 12 meters wide, were the living quarters and storage rooms. The earthen ramparts have largely been preserved, though the eastern section was leveled in the 19th century. In 1949, the remaining western section was purchased by the State of Oldenburg and placed under protection. Today, the site is an idyllic resting spot beneath shady trees.
