OTTOdendron
Since the early 1930s, the Bruns Nursery has consistently introduced new varieties from Gristede to the plant market. Wilhelm Bruns had imported various rhododendron cultivars and wild species from southern England for his own breeding projects. The new varieties resulting from these crossings were then planted in a wooded area in Gristede.
Over time, the newly bred plants were dedicated to well-known personalities or even named by them.
On June 23, 2019, the “OTTOdendron” was named by comedian Otto Waalkes.
Other new rhododendron varieties were named, for example, by Federal Presidents Richard von Weizsäcker and Johannes Rau. All varieties are located on the Walk of Fame in the entrance area of the Rhododendron Park in Gristede and can be viewed there.
